In 2001 Myspace.com was the most visited social network on the web. Users loved decorating their profiles with custom backgrounds and layouts. The opportunity to cash in on the epidemic rise of the popular new social giant was recognized by two young entrepreneurs.
David Miles Jr of Louisville and Kato Leonard of Virgina, came up with an idea to capitalize on the use of their graphic design skills. At the time they masterminded their plan, they were both only 20 years old. They wanted to change the plain look and feel of Myspace profiles by creating cool background codes to spice things up a bit.
In 2003 the budding moguls registered the domain name freeweblayouts.net and began to offer free pre-made myspace layouts. A couple weeks later David & Kato decided to integrate a free layout generator widget. This gadget would allow members to upload photos and create a personalized background of their own. The website Also offered a comment box for new layout requests.
These brilliant ideas would soon launch their small operation into a million dollar business. By 2005 freeweblayouts.net had monetized with Google Adsense and was considered to be the one of the most profitable websites on the internet. David & Kato were featured in top news media articles including The Washington Post, Wallstreet Journal and USA Today. They reportedly earned over $100,000 a month from advertising online.
Soon after their success, websites that offered free myspace backgrounds emerged from everywhere. Hundreds of individuals wanted to be a part of the lucrative venture, but freeweblayouts.net was the premier spot to customize your Myspace profile. The two self-made millionaires had achieved a six figure income from their simple website.
